From Halloween to Los Dias de Los Muertos: many Orange holidays!

Despite thedark, the macabre and the dark are the main Mood of the Holidays held between October 31st and November 2nd all over the world, the main color these days is the ORANGE!

The different traditions and cultures of the two opposite sides of the globe converge in the reflection on the theme of Death and the celebration of the latter through a very precise and defined color: Orange!

Before "Los Dias de los Muertoss "is celebrated to the sound of" Dolcetto or Scherzetto "on the night of Halloween whose symbol par excellence is the very orange Pumpkin!

But ... originally the Halloween Pumpkin was a CABBAGE TURNIP!

Legend has it that Jack managed to deceive the devil by convincing him to no longer tempt his soul, but when he died access to Heaven was denied him for his dissolute life. Forced to wander for eternity into nothingness, the devil handed him a burning ember to light the way, in order not to put it out, Jack dug up a kohlrabi and used it as a lantern.

From this story they began to celebrate the tradition in Ireland by the practice of digging the tuber to put a candle inside. Once landed in the Americas, the Irish decided to replace kohlrabi with pumpkin because:

  • bigger
  • softer
  • easier to carve.

In the New Continent: the Pumpkin and i Chempasucil.

Flowers, as in Mexico also in Italy (let's think about ours Chrysanthemum) have an ancient and central role in the celebration of these days.

In Mexico these very orange flowers are used, almost impalpable called Chemasùchil (pronounced: "sempasucìl") which form the basis for creating the gift "offering"To be placed on the altar of the dead"the altar of the dead".

The flower used is a very strong orange (a recurring color also in the Disney animated film "Coco“) And with a strong perfume once also used as a medicine, hence its symbolically saving function.

In Italy the Chempasucil are not available and the plant that comes closest to them is the Marigold, in the Hispanic tradition these thanks to the strong perfume were used to indicate the way to go to the deceased loved ones.

The undisputed power of COLOR

I find once again the power unstoppable, but above all thereuniversality of color like musical notes, it is capable of bringing together such distant and different cultures, languages and traditions.

I also think that the predilection for a vibrant, energetic and vital color just like Orange for holidays related to the cult of Death:

as if the Hereafter brings us strongly to perceive the Power of the “Aldi-QUA”!
